How ODSP Can Give You Access to Better Pain Management
Whether it be chronic pain or another health condition that classifies as a disability, as the population of Ontario begins to age, the percentage of Ontarians suffering continues to rise. Over 15% of Ontarians have a disability, including 40% of people aged 65 or higher, while 16% of those aged 18 to 64 and 27% of seniors suffer from some degree of chronic pain.
For many, that means turning towards the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). This government program doesn’t just provide income support, but also health-related benefits for people with disabilities in need of aid.
While the importance of financial support should not be understated, if you or a loved one are on ODSP, depending on your medical status, you may also be covered for various assistive and mobility devices. On top of that, you may also be covered for physiotherapy treatments or chiropractic care.
What does ODSP give you access to?
Assistive Devices Program
If you receive ODSP, you are also eligible for a separate program called the Assistive Devices Program under the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
The Assistive Devices Program normally pays for up to 75% of the cost of approved assistive devices, and in certain cases, it can pay a fixed amount for a device or even provide grants directly to a person for the supplies needed. And in cases where the Assistive Devices Program does not cover the entirety of an assistive device, ODSP can help with the additional costs.
Categories of assistive devices include:
- Mobility devices like wheeled walkers and wheelchairs,
- Visual Aids
- Hearing aids
- Orthotic or prosthetic devices
- Speech devices
- Medical supplies like ostomy supplies
- Respiratory devices
Under those categories, you have access to a range of support aids that promote injury healing, provide support, and faster recovery. These types of devices can be vital in managing your chronic pain.
Assistive devices that can help you with your pain management include:
- Compression stockings
- Custom orthotics
- Custom knee braces
- Cervical neck pillows
- Shoulder, elbow, and ankle braces
- Custom wrist braces
- Custom back braces
The benefits to physiotherapy extend far beyond just one single condition. The practice goes beyond simple physical rehabilitation; it aims to leave a profound impact on your quality of life. Physiotherapists work with their patients to radically change behavior like unhealthy postures and promote neural changes that help the sufferer with pain management in the long term.
Physiotherapy can not only be an effective route to recovery, but it is also a cost-effective one. According to a study from the Health Services Research journal, using physical therapy as a first treatment strategy led to the patient having 72% lower costs in the first year of treatment.
If you are covered by ODSP, you can contact your doctor or nurse practitioner to get started with government-funded physiotherapy. This contact will give you a referral, allowing you to sign up for these services. That contact can also help you find a government-funded physiotherapy clinic that can get you started on your journey to pain relief.
Government-Funder Chiropractic Care
Similar to physiotherapy, chiropractic care can be an incredible tool in treating the underlying causes of chronic pain and other medical conditions. This form of treatment focuses on restoring your body to normal movement and pain levels.
A chiropractor can provide treatments that can have an enormous effect on the central nervous system, relieving you of pain and discomfort in your body while building organ efficiency in the long term. Conditions that can benefit from chiropractic care include back and spinal pain, neck pain, joint problems, migraines, and more.
If you receive ODSP and you and your family spend $15 or more per month on medical transportation, then you may be able to get these costs covered under the Mandatory Special Necessities Benefit.
ODSP can help pay for your travel costs such as driving costs (mileage), bus fare, taxi fare, train ticket, and meals and accomodation if you are travelling out of town. It is important to note that you must find the most economical way to get to an appointment.
The Mandatory Special Necessities Benefit form needs to be filled out before you are scheduled to go to any appointments. However, if there is an emergency appointment, keep the receipts and that may also be covered.
Appointments that ODSP can help pay for trips to and from include:
- Approved types of drug or alcohol recovery groups
