What the New Brampton – Mississauga LRT Will Mean for Your Health & Wellbeing

While the map of public transit routes in Toronto and the GTA continues to fill in nicely, unless you’re heading into or out of downtown Toronto, you don’t really have many options.
But the Hurontario-Main Light Rail Tranist line, which received funding from the Ontario government in April, will help to change that.
Running 23 kilometres through 26 stops, from Port Credit in the south to the Brampton GO station in the north, the line gives two of the fastest growing communities in Canada, Brampton and Mississauga, a dedicated LRT that will be a faster, more convenient option to local bus routes.
But so what? Both Brampton and Mississauga are notoriously automobile-centric and the new line will not likely change that in the short-term. But ridership is projected to be a massive 31 million people per year by 2031. And there are a number of advantages for anyone who opts to park their car and take advantage of the new service.
- Less Chance of Being in a Motor Vehicle Accident – While rapid transit is not accident-free, the rates of injury are lower for transit riders than for drivers and passengers of motor vehicles. And those injuries include brain injuries, internal injuries and ongoing psychological issues.
- Reduced Stress – Commuting by car is associated with a number of stress factors, including higher anxiety and higher blood pressure.
- Better Physical Fitness – Chronic back pain and lower cardiovascular fitness are just two of the physical symptoms of driving. When compared to the few steps you take to and from your car to get to work and back – or to go shopping – using the LRT will be like getting a mini workout. You’ll burn more calories, which will help you lose weight and stay trim. And using transit reduces your carbon footprint, which makes the environment healthier for you too.
