Motor Vehicle Accident Patients: Make Sure Your Healthcare Service Provider is Licensed by the FSCO

You may never have heard of the FSCO (the Financial Services Commission of Ontario) but one of their new policies affects how easily motor vehicle accident victims receive healthcare benefits from their automobile insurance company.
The FSCO is a provincial government commission under the Ontario Ministry of Finance. The Commission regulates certain financial service providers, including insurance companies, loan and trust companies, mortgage brokers and other similar services.
The FSCO also regulates healthcare service providers who invoice automobile insurers for statutory accident benefit claims.
In other words, if you have suffered an injury in a motor vehicle accident that requires treatment – like physiotherapy, and/or a medical device, like a knee brace – and the treatment/device is covered by your automobile insurance benefits, the FSCO regulates the healthcare service you use.
New FSCO Licensing Regulations as of December 1, 2014
Starting on December 1, 2014, the FSCO requires that all service providers be licensed before they can receive direct payments from automobile insurance companies.
How the New Regulations Affects Motor Vehicle Accident Patients: If you need treatments or medical devices for injuries suffered in a car accident, the new regulations affect how quickly and easily you receive your insurance benefits.
If you use an unlicensed healthcare provider, you will need to pay for the services and medical devices you use and then submit the proper paperwork to your insurance company to be reimbursed for your claim.
You will be out-of-pocket for all your healthcare expenses from an unlicensed service provider until you submit your claim and receive payment from your insurance company.
If your service provider is licensed by the FSCO, they can be paid directly by your insurance company so you never have to pay for or be out-of-pocket for any expenses covered by your insurance policy.
