HealthMax’s Scarborough Clinic is Now Concussion Management Certified

Hockey, Thornhill

Covering almost one third of the geographical area of Toronto, Scarborough is the largest of the former cities and boroughs that amalgamated in 1998.

But being big can have its drawbacks. It’s sometimes difficult to deliver services to such a large area. While the city works on improving public transit, it’s often a long, cold wait for a bus in northeast Scarborough.

But, there’s at least one area where Scarborough is now well served and that’s in the treatment of concussions. Our Scarborough Physiotherapy Clinic is the first of our City of Toronto locations to be certified by Complete Concussion Management (CCM), the foremost concussion research company in Canada.

What Does Concussion Certification Mean?

While they are usually considered an injury suffered in contact sports, concussions can occur from any head trauma and are common in workplace and motor vehicle accidents.

Concussions are a brain injury. Symptoms can include short-term memory loss, headaches, nausea and difficulty concentrating.

Unlike other, more obvious injuries, like a broken arm, concussions are difficult to diagnose. And if symptoms aren’t treated as soon as possible, it can lead to serious long-term effects. So an early, accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment.

CCM’s certification means that doctors and specialists at HealthMax Scarborough have completed CCM’s Concussion Management Program, which applies the most up-to-date medical information and practices in a three-tiered approach to treatment.

  1. Diagnosis – The best way to diagnose concussions is to conduct a baseline test before they happen. If the patient suffers a suspected concussion, the early test results are compared to post-injury results to quickly and accurately confirm that a concussion has been suffered.
  2. Treatment – Based on medical assessments of the pre- and post-injury test results, a more customized and effective treatment program can be put into action.
  3. Reintegration – First-time concussions rarely have long-term effects. But if patients return to full activities too soon and suffer a second injury, the chances of ongoing symptoms are greatly increased. CCM’s Return-to-Play and Return-to-Learn programs help patients return to full activities in a way that minimizes the chance of further injury.

If you suspect you have suffered a concussion, or would like to take precautions to help reduce symptoms before they happen, please call HealthMax Physiotherapy’s Scarborough clinic at 416-431-4000, or Contact Us. Your initial consultation with a CCM-Certified specialist is free-of-charge.
