It’s Time to Change Your Thinking About Physiotherapy

In the old TV show “Frasier”, the character Daphne Moon is a live-in physiotherapist in charge of helping Frasier’s father, Martin, deal with the chronic pain and disability that result from a gunshot wound to the hip that he suffered as a police officer.
Many scenes in the show open with Daphne helping Martin stretch his leg or bend his hip.
It’s an accurate depiction of one of the treatments physiotherapists perform: injury rehabilitation.
But to say that physiotherapists only treat the muscle and joint pain and/or mobility issues that result from a sports injury, workplace injury or chronic condition, would not be entirely accurate. While injury and pain rehabilitation are basic functions of physiotherapy, they are definitely not the only ones.
- Prehabilitation – In addition to treating injuries, physiotherapy is quickly gaining wide acceptance as a way to prevent injuries. From improving posture and stance, to helping prevent injuries during sports activities and at work, many people are turning to physiotherapy as a way to avoid injuries, in addition to treating them. Some even use physiotherapy-based prehabilitation before major surgery to help reduce the post-operative recovery time.
- Collaborative Treatments – Physiotherapy is also increasingly used in collaboration with other disciplines and treatments, like acupuncture, orthopedics and orthotics, to help address issues that result from improper walking gait, posture or muscle and joint function.
- Improved Physical Performance – Entirely separate from rehab, prehab and using physio in conjunction with other treatments, many people are choosing physiotherapy simply as a way to improve their athletic performance, or even to improve their overall muscle and joint functioning and performance of daily activities, in ways that help improve their overall health and well-being.
