Brampton’s Pioneering Role in Naturopathic Medicine

naturopathic medicine Toronto

If you think of naturopathic medicine as being a “new” or “alternative” field of medicine, you might be surprised to learn that naturopathic doctors have been regulated in Ontario since the passing of the Drugless Practitioners Act of 1925.

Today, Ontario’s Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) will soon be part of a regulated healthcare profession under the provincial Naturopathy Act of 2007.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathy takes a holistic approach to a patient’s history and current medical condition. Compared to traditional medical approaches, naturopathic medicine treats the overall health of the patient in addition to focusing on specific diseases and conditions. NDs combine modern scientific knowledge and training with natural techniques of medical treatment to offer a distinct and effective healthcare option.

NDs may use a variety of treatment techniques, including dietary changes, herbs, teas, acupuncture, homeopathy and traditional Chinese medicine, among many others.

Before they can be licensed, Ontario NDs require seven years of post-secondary education, including a pre-med degree and four years of training at an accredited naturopathic college.

Canada’s First Naturopathic Clinic in a Public Hospital

In 2013, Brampton Civic Hospital became the home of the Brampton Naturopathic Teaching Clinic, the first such clinic in a Canadian hospital.

The clinic operates in the ambulatory care section of the hospital four evenings a week and its operations are overseen by the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM). While OHIP currently does not cover visits to a naturopathic doctor, as a teaching clinic, the CCNM underwrites the cost of the clinic so patients may visit and receive treatment free of charge.

With NDs now being regulated in Alberta, BC, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan, naturopathic medicine continues to enjoy increasing acceptance and respect in both tradition medical communities and in the minds of the public.
